WQ4RP going solar

WQ4RP going Solar

There is an interesting article about WQ4RP going solar. Since that is the Knightlites contest station perhaps we could get some more details from one of our local Knightlite that checks in on the Jarsprep net.

There are some great pictures on that site and a detailed explanation on how they hooked it up. I know JJ (nc4jj) who is a silent key and a prep net stalwart was running his shack on solar and we have several others that are doing the same. If you have not thought about solar then you may want to review the article.

Looking forward to hearing you on the radio tonight at 9:00 PM on the AK4H repeater as we have our weekly rag chew about preparedness. Whether you enjoy listening on your radio, scanner, or even echolink it is a check in driven net so if you have your technician license or higher feel free to hit the PTT button. If you have not gotten your ticket yet please let us know what we can do to help.

Great Radio Site with basics for prepping and radio!

I know I have mentioned brushbeater.wordpress.com several times and enjoy reading the information that he puts out. He is located somewhere here in North Carolina. He does a great job of talking about radio and prepping. A lot of operational security in his posts.

Ares Go Box

At the Jars Field Day we saw a Johnston County ARES Go box that had been put together by nc0j. Jamey did an excellent job and with the solar panels. He was able to operate on HF and still be fully charged. Obviously it was a sunny day but still he was operating late into the evening and had enough battery to last.

As you can tell from the pictures it is a solid design and works well. There are many features that he implemented and is a very nice package. Certainly designed to get out in the field and maintain the communication when all else fails.

Alternative Lighting

As alternative lighting has been a popular topic on various Jars Prep nets I figured the following from a local blog here in North Carolina would be a good reminder for a lot of people.

I especially like his comments towards the end shown below.

If you can be the guy who shrugs when the power goes off and simply charlie mikes (continues movement) on with his life, then the problems of the world will be no big cause for panic.

Based on the success stories shared on the Jars Prep net there are many that are just continuing on like nothing happened!

Camping and Survival

It is Tuesday and I am already looking forward to tonight’s prep net on the mighty blow torch. I was reading on http://survivalblog.com/ about a company moving down from New York to Sanford. Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to stop in can visit the store.

I talked to the owner Tony for quite a while and encourage anyone that is looking for some camping or survival stuff to visit https://www.campingsurvival.com/ as they most likely have what you need. He mentioned to me that he took the technician class last year, but was out of town for the exam. We need to ask him when visiting when he will get licensed as he would be a good resource.

baconHe has a varied background and mentioned they will be having some demo days and manufacturers visit their warehouse for some specials. I even saw professionally canned bacon for the first time. Among his long term food storage and MRE’s he also had a lot of fish meds in stock.
