If you use 20lb propane cylinders for grilling, pig cookers etc then “Be Advised, I say Be Advised” that the Blue Rhino (and possibly other brands as well) swapout tanks available at Food Lion and other outlets contain LESS propane than you’d expect. They are 20 POUND tanks but are labeled as containing 15 POUNDS. They are clearly labeled as 15lb but without reading you would expect 20 pounds. It’s like the cereal box says “Contents may have settled during shipping” but when the cereal box left the factory at least it was full. They are clearly misrepresenting their product. I know these swapout tanks are not the most economical way to purchase propane but sometimes you get in a bind with 50 people standing around a cooling pig cooker and you gotta get some propane. Just understand what you’re getting. I hope that’s helpful

  1. Remember too that you only need to open the valve one turn or less and you need to do that slowly. If opened too far too fast the valve thinks it’s broken and shuts off. I work at the garden center of a large, universally hated discount store and you’d be amazed at how many tanks I swap out that are half full or more because the owner doesn’t know any better.

73 and thanks for the net

    • That is a great point Frank. Thank you for stopping by and reminding us. I would not be shocked at the number of people that believe their tank is busted and trade that in for a Blue Rhino exchange.
