UVPaqlite for an eternal source of Light

UVPaqlite

uvpaqliteThe claim of a perpetual light source seems to be delivered by the UVpaqlite. This review from survialblog.com is pretty favorable. I  am very interested in getting my hands on some and working with a local supplier to get some in. If it works like it is supposed to this would be a great thing to have around. We might even be able to have some extras for Doug to raffle off.

Today is Tuesday and that means it is time for our weekly prep net. I look forward to tuning into night at 2100 and hearing what the topics may be. Please join us and let Doug know what you have been up too.

Preparedness or Cult you make the call

Preparedness or Cult

There are many things that people bring up during the week, but this article reports a professor who questions whether it is preparedness or cult? This can lead to a great discussion. While many things that we do can be questioned as to why any sane person would want to pursue them I am not understanding why being ready is a bad thing.

Besides the poor enjoyment of Ham Radio there are some pretty good reasons to be ready. Just ask our resident Uncle Si and I am sure he will explain why it is important for the emergency communications and what he is doing as the Johnston County Coordinator for ARES.

Since our topics tend to be all over the place on our weekly preparedness net, which is a great thing, there is no doubt that we are prepared for most emergencies. Tune in tonight at 9:00 PM for our weekly preparedness net and share your thoughts or well anything on your mind. Our great net control does a fantastic time making sure everyone gets in.  Looking forward to hearing you on the Mighty 27 tonight!

Learning the practical skills in the mountains

Learning the practical skills in the mountains

As Doug mentioned last week knowledge trumps equipment in a lot of areas and thanks to Matt sending over the following. Learning the practical skills in the mountains is offered as a teaching aid to learn the Heritage skills that many would need. This is certainly a good opportunity to learn more or practice those skills that might be rusty.

As we had such a diverse topic and long net on the mighty ’27 last week our collective group certainly has some knowledge to do many things. We certainly appreciate the efforts of Doug and all the trustees of the Auburn Repeater Corporation so that we can all benefit from the wisdom of others. I look forward to hearing from AK4H as I know Bill has some great stories and tips about keeping the radio stations on line through trying events.

Tune in this evening at 09:00 PM tonight and bring your favorite topic to the forefront. I would especially encourage any of you out there that have projects to document them and send them to us so we can see the pictures behind the words. Some of us need some free hot water and electricity.

Alternative Energy based Chicken Coop

Alternative Energy based Chicken Coop

We have a great example of making good use of extra energy with this alternative energy based chicken coop. Jerry, who is merely waiting on the FCC to deliver his Call sign, had some extra load that he needed to burn from his windmill and solar panels so he made some practical improvement to his chicken coop.

Since today is Tuesday please plan on grabbing your radio or scanner and join us on the mighty 147.270 repeater at 9:00 PM Eastern time where as our great net control operator Doug states we cover everything from a 2 day power outage to the Zombie Apocalypse.

Windmill Generators

Windmill Generators

windmillgeneratorsOn the last jars prep net there was a gentlemen that was looking for info on Windmill generators. Here is a great article that details one local person that got it done. We look forward to hearing more from Jerry once his call sign comes through.

Here is a link to my axial generator wind turbine project/saga.
With photos, documented disasters, videos, stupid newby mistakes, and final victory as it went down.
